Shoes are important, but foot health extends beyond sneakers and sandals. We’re big fans of compression socks for multiple reasons, so let us tell you why. 


Compression socks, sometimes referred to as graduated compression socks, apply pressure around the feet and ankles, with the pressure gradually decreasing up the calves. This design enhances blood circulation in the legs, encourages lymphatic drainage, and prevents blood from pooling in the feet. Compression socks have many health benefits including improving blood flow, reducing swelling, and relieving pain.


One of the primary benefits of wearing compression socks is improved circulation. By continuously applying pressure to your feet and legs throughout the day, compression socks encourage the flow of oxygen-rich blood through your leg veins. This reduces the risk of blood clots and accelerates the healing process for those prone to pressure sores and other wounds.


If you’re still on the fence as to whether or not you really need compression socks, we can help you decide. They have health benefits for everyone (ask your doctor before making any decisions though!), but some more than others – for example, those with conditions such as diabetes, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and varicose veins may find compression socks particularly beneficial for enhancing circulation in their lower legs. Additionally, compression socks can improve lymphatic drainage in the feet, ankles, and calves. This process, which circulates lymph (tissue fluid) around the organs and vessels in the lymphatic system, helps reduce and prevent swelling associated with conditions like lymphedema. Compression socks can also be advantageous for pregnant individuals, especially during the third trimester.*


Compression socks are valuable for pretty much everyone, not just for those with medical issues. By improving blood flow and decreasing swelling, compression socks can significantly reduce pain and discomfort. We would recommend trying compression socks if you’re planning to be on your feet for hours for anything from work to a music festival. Sitting for long periods of time during travel, whether you’re on a plane or in a car, or those experiencing chronic pain might also want to give them a whirl. 


Once you’ve got your pair, you might wonder, “How tight is too tight?” Compression socks should fit snugly, but it’s important to make sure your compression socks are the right size and well-fitted. You should not be experiencing pain from the compression. It’s worth noting that compression socks are relatively safe to try (you can purchase them over the counter); however, if you have any concerns or questions, we recommend asking your healthcare provider. 


So whether you’ve got a series of long shifts at work or a weekend full of road-tripping and checking out the latest bands, compression socks might be the solution to keeping you healthy and comfortable.
